Accused Craiglist Killer a BlackBerry User?

This is one of those blog posts that I don’t even want to write (the whole situation makes me sick to think about), but we’ve had a ton of editorial tips come in on it and a number of BlackBerry-related blogs have written on it so we have to give it some coverage. There’s no offense meant by this article (meant to be informative), which is an entirely sad situation.
As you’ve probably seen on mainstream news by now, the suspected Craigslist killer has been caught, largely due to the online trail he left behind. Investigators were able to follow “high-tech leads” and traced “IP addresses to physical locations” to track down 22 year old Philip Markoff, who is now charged with murder.
Making a sad situation even sadder, it looks like the accused is a BlackBerry user (all of the references in the Boston Herald article refer to BlackBerry though it’s a bit difficult to tell for sure). In pretty much all of the surveillance photos that have surfaced so far, you can see Markoff walking along in the CrackBerry position… head down, with two hands grasping the device and thumbs working away. It’s a visual all of us BlackBerry users are familiar with.
Regardless, it just goes to show you can use technology for good, or you can use it for evil. Here’s to hoping we don’t see more of this in the future. Our thoughts go out to the families of those affected.
